Derm Shield Tattoo Aftercare Bandage
We use Recovery Derm Shield, a latex-free, transparent film adhesive bandage, to protect your skin and help it heal. Derm Shield is specially designed to be breathable, and it should stay in place for 3-5 days. Please follow these instructions so you can begin proudly displaying your new tattoo!
Excess fluid buildup under Derm Shield is normal
Your skin will produce blood/fluid for the first few days. This is a normal part of the healing process. Leave it alone – your body will re-absorb excess fluids over a few days.
If your Derm Shield bandage leaks slightly, dab it gently with a paper towel and press the bandage back into place. Derm Shield is water-resistant, and it’s OK to shower with it on. Just don’t touch it until it’s time to remove it. If the bandage won’t stay in place after 2 or 3 days, it’s OK to remove it.
After you remove your bandage, DO NOT submerge your tattoo underwater for the first two weeks.
How to remove Derm Shield
To remove your Derm Shield, peel it back slowly, beginning at the edge. It’s easiest to remove using plain liquid hand soap or while taking a shower. Pull it back gently over itself – to avoid stretching your skin, don’t pull the bandage out away from your body. The bandage will be sticky, but it shouldn’t hurt if you keep using soap and water. Be patient, and peel the bandage back slowly.
Once you’ve removed your Derm Shield, gently wash the area with soap using only your hand – no washcloth – and then allow your skin to air-dry.
Once your skin is dry, apply a small amount of plain white unscented skin lotion.
Light flaking of your skin will occur. Again, this is totally normal. Lightly wash the area twice daily and apply lotion for the next week or until your skin returns to normal.
You do not need ointment
Derm Shield eliminates the need for ointments. Plain white unscented lotion is all you need.
If light touch-up work is needed for your tattoo, you’ll need to wait at least 30 days or more, depending on the tattoo.
Your tattoo should heal completely in 4-6 weeks. If you have any questions or problems, call your artist. Don’t take advice from friends, talk to your artist!
